LEVEL DESIGNER

The roar of the engine, the thrill of the chase, you can smell first place but it is just out of reach! If only you weren’t driving such a junker… You’ll need to manage your finances as you hit the racing circuit, gain sponsorship's, sell old racers, and pick out parts and upgrades to build your very own “dream racer”. So start your engines and burn some rubber. Dream Racer is go-kart racing at its finest!

I was responsible for designing and implementing 2 new racetrack levels and co-designing a 3rd.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Original Track Model

This is the original track model for the Volcano level I designed. I made the original in Maya, and then it was touched up by our artists to be textured and placed back in the game.

Completed Track

Here is the completed track put in the game, a snowy mountain volcano. I wanted to make something different from the other tracks (Forest, Island, and Cave) and was inspired by Mario Kart's DK Mountain and Banjo Kazooie's Hailfire Peaks. I'm very happy with how everything turned out.

Playtesting

I did a lot of playtesting to make sure the level was fun and balanced. The jump depicted above was ia fun challenge because all karts had to be able to make it across, and different karts had different speeds and boostpad stats. There is also a part where the track splits into 2 parts (one way gives rockets, the other gives a shortcut chance and coins) and I had to make sure that each way gave a similar time to complete.

Tutorial Track

I was also in charge of creating a tutorial level that players could learn and practice game mechanics including coins, boostpads, rockets, and movement. It has a simple NASCAR inspired design and because we didn't want a lot of new art created, it re-uses art assets from the Island and Classic tracks.
